Inscription reads:
St Peter Cheap
The church built on this site in 1196 was destroyed by the Great
Fire of London in 1666. This churchyard now forms part of the
United Parish of St Vedast-alias-Foster in nearby Foster Lane.
Mass is said there weekdays at 1215 and sung on Sundays
at 1100.
William Wordsworth wrote of this churchyard and tree:
At the corner of Wood Street, when daylight appears hangs a
thrush that sings loud, it has sung for three years:
Poor Susan has passed by the spot, and has heard in the
silence of morning the song of the bird.
