The mural had begun to deteriorate and eventually was replaced by another one dedicated to Charles Darwin.
Darwin has a tenuous claim to belong to Bromley, and there was a belief that Wells had become persona non grata as he had refused the Freedom of the Borough of Bromley because of his bad memories of when he lived there as a child.
